With each second that ticked past his resolve grew.

No way was he allowing Pearl to die in this hellhole.

Absolutely not going to happen.

If he had to, Jesse would sacrifice his life in a heartbeat to save hers.

This woman did crazy things to him. Crazy but he liked them. Growing up he’d been the oldest, confident, capable, able to take care of himself. Immy was the baby, the one who had gotten all the attention, it had never worried him, he’d showered the sweet, sunshiny little girl with attention as well.

Jesse hadn’t realized until Pearl told him she wanted to hear about his past because she cared how badly he’d needed to hear those words.

To know that someone cared.

It sounded hypocritical given he lived his life pushing anyone and everyone as far away from him as he could get. Anyone who knew him thought of him as a man consumed with anger, who was rude to everyone, had no friends, and no life outside of work.

Somehow Pearl saw beneath that.

Saw him.

For that alone he owed her everything he had to give, not excluding his very life.

Beside him she shifted, giving a small moan as she did so. Despite her insistences that she was okay and had suffered far worse, he knew she was hurting. Between her blistered and raw feet, the bruises littering her beautiful face, and the fact that every breath she took had to be agony she was hardly in any shape to be attempting an escape.

Not that that would stop her.

Pearl was one of the toughest people he’d ever met, and he knew she would never let any injuries get in the way of fighting.

While this wasn’t the way he’d hoped to get access to Edgar Tovar they were here, he was here, and that meant the list he kept of all his dealings was here too. In that list were the answers Pearl needed. A way to find those missing little girls she had been hunting. He had the answers he needed about his sister. They hadn’t brought with them the peace he’d been hoping for but that had come in the form of a five foot two, raven-haired, emerald eyed beauty who was as tough as she was strong.

“Mmm, sorry, fell asleep on you.” Pearl gave a sleepy stretch and pushed herself into a sitting position.

“You needed the rest.”

“You need rest too.”

Jesse merely waved off her concern. She was the one who’d been almost buried alive in the sand, almost succumb to dehydration, and been beaten. He was fine. Too much adrenalin still humming through his body for him to worry about anything else.

Getting Pearl safe was his number one priority.

Number two was getting that list from Edgar.

Number three was getting out of here himself.

“Jesse.” Pearl tugged on his shoulder. “I’m worried about you.”

Worried about him.

That sounded so strange.

His mom worried about him when he joined the military, then Delta. She hadn’t felt any better when he’d left Delta to join the DEA. She
